Deutsch: Eine längere Videosequenz, die das Thema "16K" illustrieren soll. Sie zeigt eine Kamerabewegung durch eine unendlich lange Reihe von Menger-Schwämmen und die einzelnen Frames wurden mit Mandelbulber2 generiert. Ein Frame brauchte etwa 1-1,2 Minuten, bis es gerendert war.


Prozedur:

  • Zunächst werden 120 Frames einzeln in Mandelbulber2 gerendert. Bei solch hohen Auflösungen ist eine GeForce RTX 3090 (wie hier geschehen) oder vergleichbar notwendig.
  • Die so entstandene Bildersequenz wird mit Befehl durch FFMPEG in den VP9-Codec codiert. Dazu ist eine leistungsstarke CPU nötig, vorzüglich mit mindestens 16 Kernen. In diesem Fall war die Codierungsgeschwindigkeit etwa 0,17 FPS.


16K oder QUHD (Quad Ultra High Definition) meint eine Auflösung von meist 15360 x 8640 Pixeln (oder mehr), und hat 4x mehr Pixel als 8K, 16x mehr als 4K und 64x mehr als Full HD.



16K heute:

  • 16K ist wohl in 2021 oder 2022 gar nicht praxistauglich. Das Rendern/Filmen in dieser Auflösung ist meist nur sehr umständlich und teils mit Tricksereien zu erreichen. Das Verarbeiten erfordert absolute High-End-Hardware. Die Wiedergabe ist genauso herausfordernd. Wiedergabegeräte mit dieser Auflösung sind, wenn überhaupt verfügbar, gar nicht für Endkunden verfügbar, und kosten über 100000 €. 16K-Videos ohne (sichtbare) Kompressionsartefakte mit PCs wiederzugeben, ist wohl nicht möglich. Der VLC Media Player verzichtet mit Stand 02. Januar 2022 auf Wiedergabe der Videospur bei 16K-Videos. Manche Codecs könnten korrupte Videodateien erzeugen, wenn 16K-Videos (um-)codiert werden müssen. Als 16K-taugliche Codecs könnten der H.266-Codec und der AV1-Codec dienen.



Umgang mit 16K im Alltag:

  • Der Umgang von 16K in 2021/2022 ist heute unbedacht, da er faktisch nicht vorkommt. Die Produktion echt nativer 16K-Inhalte ist rar und eben nicht von Endkunden 1:1 betrachtbar. Auch die mit 16K einhergehenden Datenraten und benötigten Speicherkapazitäten sind extrem hoch. Hochqualitative 16K-Videos können Datenraten von über 1,5 Gbps erreichen. YouTube etwa unterstützt maximal 8K; 16K-Videos werden nach langer Verarbeitungszeit maximal in 8K von YouTube ausgegeben. In einigen Jahren könnte jedoch 16K im VR-Bereich genutzt werden, sodass der gezeigte Ausschnitt des 360°-Videos für den Betrachter 90° beträgt und etwa 8K entspricht. Wenn man bedenkt, dass um 2009 herum HD verbreitet wurde, und nun teils bei 4K-8K ist, könnte die Verbreitung dank bessere Hardware bald möglich sein, wenn dessen Einsatz als sinnvoll erachtet wird oder notwendig ist.



16K-Angebote:

  • Plattformen mit 16K sind so aus oben genannten Gründen marginal. Geräte, die 16K-Videos nativ im Browser wiedergeben könnten, sind nicht für den Massenmarkt vorhanden. Auch die benötigte Bandbreite wäre um 2021/2022 wohl zu hoch.

Procedure:

  • First, 120 frames are rendered individually in Mandelbulber2. For such high resolutions, a GeForce RTX 3090 (as done here) or comparable is necessary.
  • The resulting image sequence is encoded into the VP9 codec with command by FFMPEG. This requires a powerful CPU, preferably with at least 16 cores. In this case, the encoding speed was about 0.17 FPS.

16K or QUHD (Quad Ultra High Definition) means a resolution of mostly 15360 x 8640 pixels (or more), and has 4x more pixels than 8K, 16x more than 4K, and 64x more than Full HD.



16K today:

  • 16K is probably not practical at all in 2021 or 2022. Rendering/filming in this resolution is usually only very cumbersome and partly achievable with trickery. Processing requires absolute high-end hardware. Playback is just as challenging. Playback devices with this resolution are, if available at all, not available at all for end customers, and cost over 100000 €. Playing back 16K videos without (visible) compression artifacts with PCs is probably not possible. As of 02 January 2022, the VLC Media Player does not play the video track for 16K videos. Some codecs might create corrupt video files if 16K videos have to be (re-)encoded. The H.266 codec and the AV1 codec could serve as 16K-capable codecs.



Dealing with 16K in everyday life:

  • Dealing with 16K in 2021/2022 today is imprudent, as it is factually non-existent. Production of true native 16K content is rare and just not viewable 1:1 by end users. Also, the data rates and storage capacities required with 16K are extremely high. High-quality 16K videos can reach data rates of over 1.5 Gbps. YouTube, for example, supports a maximum of 8K; 16K videos are output from YouTube in 8K at most after a long processing time. In a few years, however, 16K could be used in VR, so that the section of 360° video shown to the viewer would be 90° and roughly equivalent to 8K. Considering that around 2009 HD became widespread, and is now partly at 4K-8K, thanks to better hardware, distribution could soon be possible if its use is deemed useful or necessary.



16K offerings:

  • Platforms with 16K are so marginal for reasons stated above. Devices that could natively play 16K video in the browser are not available for the mass market. Also, the bandwidth required would probably be too high around 2021/2022.
